The effect of very low birth weight on the structural development of the prefrontal cortex of rats in the postnatal period: an immunocytochemical study.
Prenatal and perinatal factors have long been considered as the main determinants of brain development. In recent years, the importance of postnatal factors on the cerebral structural maturation has been pointed out. Many studies have shown that a lack of oxygen in the brain during the perinatal period (neonatal hypoxia) causes permanent changes in the structural development of the brain, including the prefrontal cortex. In this study, we examined the effects of postnatal hypoxia (7 days after birth) on the structural development of the prefrontal cortex of the rat brain. The results obtained in the present study showed that neonatal hypoxia caused a significant decrease in the number of cortical neurons, and increased the thickness of the neuropil in the developing prefrontal cortex, especially in layer II of the dorsolateral and ventrolateral prefrontal cortex, and the medial prefrontal cortex.
